What Is TMJ?
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction occurs in the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. Someone with TMJ may experience pain, discomfort, and soreness in this region. Since this joint is present on both sides of the jaw, individuals may experience TMJ in both joints, while it is more commonly experienced in just one joint.
Causes of TMJ
While the cause of TMJ is not always apparent, TMJ is often associated with an injury to the jaw. Other causes of TMJ can include the following:
- Frequent teeth grinding or clenching
- Stress
- Malocclusion
- Genetics
Other causes of TMJ include poor eating habits, poor posture, hormonal changes, and dehydration. Individuals who eat food that is difficult to chew too often can cause their temporomandibular joint to become fatigued, which can lead to TMJ.
TMJ Symptoms
While there are many TMJ symptoms. The most common include jaw pain and stiffness, headaches, earaches, toothaches, and difficulty opening or closing your jaw. Another possible sign of TMJ is frequent jaw popping or clicking. Ringing in your ears from time to time may also be a sign of TMJ.
TMJ Treatments
