Conscious sedation for the fearful or apprehensive patient
Conscious sedation has been around for many years from its early days of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) to the more current administration of oral sedation. Depending on the patient level of apprehension and length of the procedure, patients often show they would like to be asleep. with the advent of conscious sedation, this can be achieved in a safe and effective way.
Let's discuss a typical scenario, Mary, a 49-year-old patient requires some cleaning, fillings and root canal, extractions and implants. The patient has a history of traumatic experiences and wants to proceed but is very scared. With conscious sedation, we are able to complete all treatment in just one appointment. the patient for all intent and purposes is asleep but can easily be awakened and has all their protective reflexes. The most common and beneficial effect is complete amnesia of the appointment. There is no emotional trauma, pain, or need to be seen by multiple dentists.
Ease of administration
Approximately 1 hour prior to their dental procedure, the patient will be administrated sedation in pill form. dosage is dependent on patients size, weight, age, and supplemented by Nitrous Oxide and oxygen. The patient is carefully monitored for heart rate, oxygen, and blood pressure to assume patients safety.
