3 Toothbrushing Tips Every Parent Should Teach Their Kids

Pediatric Dentistry Melville, NYYou can teach your kid to grab their toothbrush, put some toothpaste on it, and then let them go to town, but they likely aren’t getting the job done. With a few easy tips, however, you can teach your kids how to properly brush their teeth so that they will have a healthy smile to last them a lifetime.

How to Apply Soft Pressure

The amount of pressure you apply to your teeth when brushing them is crucial. For instance, you want to apply enough pressure so that your teeth get clean, but you don’t want to use so much pressure that it makes your gums bleed. Show your child how much pressure to apply to their teeth when brushing by gently placing your hand over theirs while they brush their teeth so that they can feel firsthand how much pressure they need to apply.

To Use the Right Amount of Toothpaste

For babies under the age of two, you should be applying toothpaste that’s the size of a grain of rice, because it’s enough to clean their teeth without harming them if they accidentally swallow it. For kids that are over the age of two and that can brush their teeth without swallowing their toothpaste, you can start to apply an amount that’s the size of a pea.

To Brush for Two Minutes

You as an adult may not even be aware of this, but you and your children should be brushing your teeth for two minutes at a time while focusing on all teeth. To ensure that your child is brushing their teeth for the entire two minutes, try setting either a timer on your phone or get one of those small minute hourglasses so that they can keep an eye on the time while they are brushing.

By teaching your kids these simply tooth brushing tricks, you can help them fight cavities and have a healthier smile. To schedule your child’s next dental cleaning or to learn more pediatric dental tips, contact our Melville office at  (631) 423-6767.
