Grafting the Bone Before the Placement of a Dental Implant

Apr. 15 2023

Young woman holding a fork eatingDental implants continue to be a popular solution for patients in the Melville, NY, area with tooth loss. These restorations are made of titanium metal and act as tooth root replacements. They are versatile, being used by patients to replace one, several, or all of the teeth in the smile. However, to be a proper candidate for dental implants, patients need to have enough bone in the jaw to allow a process called osseointegration to occur. Without this, the placement of a dental implant will not be successful. At Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island, Dr. Dean Glasser and his team can educate you on the advantages of building up the bone with bone grafting before placing dental implants and what to expect throughout the process.

What To Expect When Grafting Bone Before the Placement of a Dental Implant

Before the placement of a dental implant, patients may be advised to undergo bone grafting. In this procedure, new bone tissue is added to areas where the jawbone has been lost due to trauma or periodontal disease. Bone grafting can help strengthen the jaw and improve the success rate for dental implants.

Patients should expect some discomfort during the treatment, but local anesthesia should make it bearable. Expect surgery to last between one and two hours, and post-surgery swelling and bruising around the area that may take up to two weeks before subsiding. A diet consisting of soft foods will likely be needed while healing.

Follow-up appointments are necessary after a bone graft so that your dentist can monitor your progress. In between visits, patients should keep the area clean by gently brushing and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash. Dr. Dean Glasser may also provide antibiotics to help reduce the risk of infection.

Why Might I Choose Dental Implants To Restore My Smile?

Jan. 15 2023

Portrait of cheerful middle-aged couple at homeIf you're missing one or more teeth, it's important to find a solution that will help restore your smile and keep your remaining teeth healthy. One of the most popular options available today is dental implants – and for a good reason! Dr. Dean Glasser and his team in Melville, NY, can educate you further on the advantages of implants.

Here are just a few reasons why choosing dental implants to replace missing teeth may be the right choice for you:

  • Dental implants are designed to both look and feel like natural teeth, providing you with a beautiful, long-lasting smile that can improve your overall self-confidence.
  • Unlike other replacement options such as dentures or bridges, dental implants don't rely on nearby teeth for support – they actually act as an anchor in the jawbone. This reduces stress on your remaining teeth, helping them stay healthy and strong.
  • Dental implants are a permanent option to tooth loss, lasting for many years with proper care. They also don't require any complex maintenance or special daily cleaning requirements – simply brush and floss as you normally would to keep them looking their best.
  • Because high-quality restorations such as dentures, bridges, and crowns are placed over dental implants, they look great! The restorations used over the implants are customized for the patient to match the appearance of their remaining teeth, ensuring the final restoration blends in with the smile and doesn't stand out as a dental repair.
  • Dental implants do not require any special care or attention compared to the rest of the smile. Brushing, flossing, and routine visits to the dentist will ensure the longevity of dental implant restorations.

Why sufficient bone is needed to place dental implants

Oct. 15 2022

happy woman smiling, looking beautiful and elegantDo you think about dental implants to replace your missing teeth? If so, you need to make sure you are a proper candidate. Dr. Dean Glasser of Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island in Melville, NY, explains the need for enough bone to support implants in the future properly.

Why do I need sufficient bone for the placement of dental implants?

When you lose a natural adult tooth, the bone around that tooth begins to resorb or break down. This is because the bone is no longer being stimulated by the tooth root. If you don’t replace the tooth, the bone loss will continue and can eventually lead to severe problems. Dental implants are placed surgically by a professional into the jawbone to act as artificial roots and help prevent further bone loss while being used for supporting dental crowns, dental bridges, or full dentures. For dental implants to be successful, patients need to have enough bone present to support them. If you don’t have enough bone, there are a few options available to you. Dr. Dean Glasser can go through these solutions with you during a consultation appointment to assist you in better understanding the ways in which you can prepare your smile for the placement of dental implants.

These solutions include:

  • Bone grafting - the most common solution is bone grafting. This is a process where natural bone or material is used to rebuild the ridge of the dental arch to allow dental implants to be placed into them. The process takes some time but allows patients to obtain dental implants at a later date.
  • Mini dental implants - while traditional implants require sufficient bone for successful placement, mini dental implants are smaller and shorter and can be placed in areas where traditional dental implants cannot. Once placed, they can still stimulate bone growth through osseointegration, keeping the implants firmly in place for many years.

How can Dr. Dean Glasser help you prepare for dental implantation?

Sep. 15 2022

Dental implants are a common and highly desirable way to replace one or more missing teeth within the smile. With the help of Drs. Dean and Renee Glasser, many patients can find out that they are appropriate candidates for this solution and can enjoy a more permanent, long-lasting alternative to a dental bridge, complete dentures, and partial dentures. During a consultation appointment, our team can evaluate you to determine if you are a good fit for dental implants and discuss the plan for dental implantation long before the final surgery is performed.

What are dental implants?

Drs. Dean and Renee Glasser of Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island describe the dental implant as a titanium metal replacement of the natural tooth root. These restorations are known to last a lifetime with appropriate care from the patient as they use the natural jawbone to maintain them in place and ensure proper functionality. These are popular because they function like natural teeth and provide a more permanent alternative to parietal and full dentures.

How can I prepare for the placement of dental implants?

Patients who want to receive dental implants must ensure that they are in good oral and overall health. This means that if you have any current gum disease, it must be resolved before implant surgery can occur. Also, patients with diabetes or other medical conditions will need to have these under control. Smokers will also need to abstain from cigarettes for at least two weeks prior to and after the surgery to ensure proper healing. Patients who do not have enough bone available for successful placement can talk to our team about the possibility of bone grafting to build up the area and prepare for placement at a later time.

Implant placement and restoration

Jun. 15 2022

attractive asian middle aged smilingDental implants are a popular tooth restoration option for patients in the area of Melville, NY. Drs. Dean and Renee Glasser of Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island encourage you to consider implants whenever possible to replace one or more teeth in the smile. These restorations will last many years with proper care, making them a smart investment for many of our patients. Learning about the process of obtaining dental implant can give you a good idea of what makes these restorations highly desirable.

The dental implant placement process typically includes the following steps:

  • Consultation: Our dental team will take a medical history and perform a physical examination to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. They will also take X-rays to assess the condition of your jawbone and gums, as dental implants do require patients to have enough bone structure to ensure a successful procedure.
  • Surgical Procedure: If you are a candidate for implants, one of our dentists will arrange an appointment for the surgical procedure. During this time, Drs. Dean and Renee Glasser will surgically place the implant in your jawbone. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.
  • Healing: After the implants are placed, you will need to wait several months for them to heal. During this time, you may need to wear a temporary denture. This is perfectly normal and is the time during which the bone grows around the implant to solidify it into place. This process is known as osseointegration and is necessary to ensure the dental implant is properly in place for many, many years!
  • Restoration: Once the implants have healed, our dentist will restore them with a crown, bridge, or denture. The type of restoration needed will depend on how many teeth are being replaced and how the dental implants are being used. Implants are extremely versatile and may replace one, several, or all the teeth for a patient.

Ways to replace missing teeth in the mouth

Nov. 15 2020

Statistically over the course of ones lifetime we are likely to lose one or more teeth for various reasons. Perhaps you’ve had issues with severe tooth decay,  late-stage periodontal disease, or trauma. With missing teeth, patients often experience problems such as the shifting of existing teeth, bone resorption, or ineffective chewing and speaking. Often patients with anterior tooth loss may feel less than confident with their smile or facial appearance. Drs. Dean and Renee Glasser and their experienced team at Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island work regularly with their patients to help them choose a tooth replacement option appropriate for their unique situation. In certain situations, in addition to local anesthetic, the apprehensive or anxious patient may require conscious sedation. Dr. Dean Glasser is Certified in the administration of Enteral or Oral Conscious Sedation. The purpose of sedation dentistry is to provide a more suitable and comfortable state of relaxation for the patient as they proceed through their course of treatment.  Below are just a few of the more common ways in which a patient might choose to replace one or more missing teeth:

  • Dental bridge – a dental bridge “bridges the gap” between natural teeth where one or more teeth are missing. This restoration is custom-made and uses the adjacent teeth for support. It is a fixed (cemented) prosthetic solution.
  • Dental implant – dental implants are in high demand as they provide a more conservative option to drilling down adjacent teeth. They use a titanium screw design that functions as an artificial tooth root. They can be restored in many ways and continue to be a popular choice for permanent tooth replacement.
  • Implant-Retained Bridges and Implant-Retained Dentures – a hybrid restoration of implants and dental prosthetics, the implant-retained dentures often referred to as "All on Four" or Bar Overdentures are a conservative alternative to full dentures. Implant supported crowns and bridges are often a great option as they feel and function in many ways like your original teeth. This is the strongest and most durable solution for extensive tooth loss.
  • Partial denture – partial dentures have a metal framework and false natural-looking teeth. They slide into place and use the existing teeth for support. They are easy to remove and replace, ensuring they are simple to care for and keep clean.
  • Full denture – a full denture is used in replacing all the teeth in the dental arch. It is typically made with acrylic and designed to look like natural teeth. They are the most economical solution for extensive tooth loss but provide the least function and natural feel.

How implants work

Dental implants are a wonderful solution for patients in the Melville, NY and Long island area with missing teeth. These titanium posts are used as a foundation for restorations such as bridges, crowns, and even dentures. They are held into the bone of the jaw for stability and strength, and is one of the most permanent options for patients to consider. Dental implants stimulate the process of bone maintenance by a process called osseointegration. When placed, dental implants provide a permanent restoration on a stable foundation for maximum function and esthetics.

The versatility of dental implants

Dental implants can replace one, several, or all the teeth in the dental arch. The titanium post is a foundation for any type of restoration. A single missing tooth can be replaced using a dental crown over the abutment of the implant, while an entire arch of teeth can be replaced with the stabilization of a full denture that snaps or screws into place with several implants along the jaw. Patients who need to replace several teeth may also find that the use of a dental implant to anchor one or both sides of a dental bridge is beneficial in providing a non-removable option. The versatility of dental implants is part of what makes them a popular choice.

What Factors Are Taken into Consideration before Placing a Dental Implant?

Nov. 15 2019

Implant Dentistry Long Island, NYA desirable solution to missing teeth is that of dental implants. Patients in the Melville, NY area who are interested in obtaining dental implants will want to work with a dentist who can evaluate them for candidacy. There are several factors that Dr. Dean Glasser of Implant and General Dentistry of Long Island needs to consider before determining if a patient can benefit from this particular restoration.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a dental restoration that is made of titanium and looks like a small post or screw. A dentist will insert this implant into the space where a tooth is missing. The bone around the implant grows through a process called osseointegration. This process ensures the implant can stay firmly in place. The implant acts as a natural tooth root. The dentist then restores the top of the implant with a crown, bridge, or denture based on the patient’s unique situation and specific needs.

What factors are considered when determining candidacy for dental implants?

While dental implants are popular, not everyone is considered a viable candidate for them. Dental implants require patients to:

  • Have sufficient bone structure. The jaw bone that holds teeth in place must be strong, healthy, and sufficient to support the dental implant. While bone growth occurs after placement, there needs to be enough bone for the process to start. Some patients consider bone grafting to build up the jaw bone and prepare for the placement of a dental implant.
  • Have a healthy smile. Conditions such as periodontal disease can cause the bone of the jaw to shrink, which puts dental implants at risk of being unsuccessful in the long-term. Patients considering dental implants need to be serious about their oral health and have a smile free from decay and disease.
  • Take care of the smile afterwards. Once dental implants are in place, they can still be lost if patients do not care for their smile as they should. Patients should book routine visits with their dentist to monitor their dental implants and overall health, and should brush and floss as directed to keep teeth and gums clean.

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Get Dental Implants

Oct. 15 2018

Implant Dentistry Long Island, NYDid you know that one-third of the United States’ population has one or more missing teeth? If that number doesn't shock you, then we don't know what will. The good news about tooth loss (if there is any good news) is that Dean Glasser offers patients a variety of different treatments, including dental implants, to help restore your appearance and jaw functionality. If you have been putting off getting dental implants either for financial reasons or because you have a little bit of dental anxiety, here’s why you shouldn’t wait any longer.

Your Jaw Bone May Start To Atrophy

When you have a missing tooth for an extended period of time, that portion of your jaw can start to atrophy because it has nothing that's holding it in place or making it work. With a simple dental implant procedure, however, we can prevent any sort of atrophying to help restore your jaw health.

You May Have a Hard Time Chewing

Let’s face it: the only real way for you to be able to chew properly is with a mouth full of teeth. If, however, you have one or more missing teeth then you aren't going to be able to chew or even enjoy your food as well.

You May Not Look Your Best

If you are missing a tooth near the front of your mouth, then your appearance may start to suffer. With dental implants, because they look natural and can be matched to your surrounding teeth, you can restore your appearance so that you won’t feel self-conscious.

Dental implants can be a real mouth saver. If you have one or more missing teeth but have a strong enough to support dental implants, make sure that you don’t wait another day and that you schedule your consultation appointment with Dr. Dean Glasser at our Melville office. Call us today at (631) 423-6767.

3 Tips to Help Speed Up Your Dental Implant Recovery

Aug. 15 2018

Dental Implants Melville, NY | Dr. Dean GlasserIf you have recently been told by Dr. Dean Glasser that you need dental implants, you may have more questions about them than you can swallow. Luckily, our staff is here to help answer any of your questions and concerns. The dental implant procedure itself is a two-step procedure. During the first step, a metal rod (which essentially acts an artificial root) will be surgically implanted into your gums. As long as your gums heal nicely around the implant and the implant sticks, then we can move forward with the second step. But because recovery from the first step is so critical, you may not know where to start. This article will take a closer look at three ways to speed up your dental implant recovery.

Rest

For the first day or two, we encourage our patients to take time off of work or away from daily duties to rest. Resting is your body’s number one way to heal itself— no matter what kind of surgery you are having. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to lay in bed all day and watch movies?

Be Careful

For the first few days after surgery, make sure that you are careful with the implant area. Specifically, make sure that you don’t prod or probe the area which can disrupt the healing process. Also, we usually encourage patients to avoid doing things like swishing with a lot of water because this can also disrupt any healing.

Switch Out Your Gauze

Some patients experience more bleeding at the surgical site than others. If you do experience regular bleeding for the first several days, make sure that you are applying gauze to the area. The gauze will help stop the bleeding and absorb the blood. If you do use gauze, however, make sure that you switch it out for clean bandages every couple of hours. Dirty gauze can harbor germs and bacteria which may cause an infection.

When we send you home from dental implant surgery, we will give you detailed recovery instructions, but a few extra tips never hurt. To learn more about dental implant surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dean Glasser at our Melville office and call us at (631) 423-6767.
